What Makes My Sessions Different

Clients often mention my sense of humor and adaptability as unexpected benefits of our work together. Don't like eye contact? We don't have to do it. Prefer a faster pace with lots of questions rather than silence? I can adjust. Want to slow things down to process? We can make that space. Even something as simple as both holding a cup of tea during our session can help create the comfortable atmosphere you need to do this important work.

Whether you're struggling with anxiety, identity questions, life transitions, or complex grief, I'd be honored to walk alongside you. Together, we can help you develop the deep roots and flexibility needed to weather life's challenges while creating a life of meaning and purpose.

Dr. Matti Martin, PsyD, LP

Hi there! I'm Dr. Matti Martin, founder of Growth Grove. I believe therapy should be more than just a listening ear—it should actually help you create meaningful change in your life.

As a licensed clinical psychologist with doctoral training, I bring a deeper understanding of the brain-body connection to our work together. When you're experiencing anxiety, depression, or other challenges, it's not "just in your head"—your entire nervous system is involved. Using my skills as an educator, I'll help you understand these connections and develop practical strategies that address both your thoughts and physical experiences.

My Approach

Having been in the client's chair myself, I know how frustrating it can be when therapy feels like endless talking without progress. That's why I balance deep introspective work with practical skill-building. You'll leave each session with at least one specific action or technique to practice between our meetings, ensuring you're always moving forward.

I believe in celebrating your wins while gently challenging you to stretch toward your goals. Real growth requires honest feedback—something my clients appreciate even when it's difficult to hear. My approach is primarily rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, thoughtfully integrated with CBT, DBT, and feminist therapy techniques to create a personalized experience.

Beyond the Therapy Room

When I'm not in session, you might find me on campus where I also work as a professor of psychology. In my free time, you’ll find me cooking, hiking forest trails, or working in my garden. I'm also an artist—those paintings on my wall during telehealth sessions? Those are mine! I help out on my family's farm and love dancing (especially bachata, merengue, and classic waltz}. I also love listening to audiobooks, podcasts, and music — If you have any recommendations, please send them my way!

Therapy Mascot

Harlan is a rescue cat who enjoys long naps in the sun and frequent cuddles. He occasionally makes appearances during telehealth appointments with Dr. Martin where he offers small meows of encouragement and ASMR worthy purrs to soothe your nerves.

What to Expect: Your First Few Appointments

Free 15-Minute Consultation I always begin with a complimentary phone or video chat to discuss your current challenges and determine if we're a good fit. If I believe another provider might better serve your needs, I'll happily provide referrals to trusted colleagues.

First Appointment: Comprehensive Assessment Before our first full session, I'll send you intake paperwork to gather important background information. Don't worry if paperwork is challenging—we can complete it together during our session if needed. This first appointment focuses on understanding your unique situation in depth. The more information we gather upfront, the sooner we can move into meaningful therapeutic work.

Second Appointment: Treatment Planning After reviewing your assessment information, I'll share my professional insights about potential diagnoses and the biological, environmental, and psychological factors affecting your wellbeing. Together, we'll develop a customized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and priorities. You'll leave this session with your first concrete step toward improving your mental health.

Third Appointment and Beyond From here, our work together is tailored to your individual journey. Every 8-12 weeks, we'll review your progress and adjust our approach as needed to ensure you're getting the results you want.
